Blog: Administrative Reviews to Begin in Halton District School Board

On October 16, 2017, the Ministry of Education appointed Margaret Wilson as an independent facilitator to examine the accommodation review process undertaken by the Halton District School Board this past year.

The objective of the Administrative Review is to determine if the board followed its locally developed accommodation review policy. I am confident that Ms. Wilson is committed to the wellbeing of our students and will ensure they are provided with the best possible education.

It is important to remember that it is not the mandate of the ministry or the facilitator to review or change the final decision of a school board through the Administrative Review process. Decisions about student accommodations — including school closures — are and continue to be the responsibility of locally elected school boards.

Recently, the Ministry of Education announced an overhaul to the process that school boards use to review schools for potential closure. This decision reflects the feedback of many Ontarians, including a number of parents and advocates in our community. I want to thank those of you who have voiced concerns, for your commitment.

I look forward to working with you and on your behalf towards an improved process.

Our schools play a vital role in our communities and the decisions around local education needs are critical to the success of our students and families. As your Member of Provincial Parliament, I will continue to monitor the ongoing review closely and look forward to the facilitator’s final report.

I’d like to thank PAR Committee members, parents, students, principals, teachers and constituents who have all played very important roles in, what has been at times a difficult and emotional process.

Working together, we can ensure that our community resources are best used to meet the needs of our children and families.
