Today we lost one of the architects of the Canadian songbook. Gord Downie’s iconic lyrics and the vivid tapestry he created with his music will remain in our hearts and minds forever. We send our condolences to his children, his family, his band mates, his fans and all those close to him.
Beyond the arts, Gord was a passionate advocate for social justice issues and his powerful legacy will include raising awareness of the tragic legacy of the residential schools, and the importance of Indigenous reconciliation.
His music, his gentle nature, his wonderful sense of humour, his humanity - all were vividly on display in the recently released documentary “Long Time Running” that captured The Tragically Hip’s final tour, and will serve as a lasting memory of a profile in courage.
Gord selflessly shared his final cancer journey with all of us and his courage inspired us all. As we share our individual memories of Gord Downie’s poetry and artistry today – as we reflect on our memories of the songs that have become part of the soundtrack of our lives – we are forever grateful for the gift he was to all of us.
